On this day, a celebration of Dick Rohead's 80th Birthday was held.
A great event, attended by many of Dick's friends in Englewood plus a another couple, Rob and Monica Dyck, who spend the winters with Lise and Dick down in Old Mexico.
A great time was had by everyone there, as you will see from the pictures that follow, Spectacular food, in abundance, was prepared by Dick's family - Lise and their daughter Caroline, and served with a smile to everyone in the garden by Dick's eleven year old grand daughter Mylène.
The main event was definitely the presentation of the cake by Caroline and Mylène. And yes, it did have 80 candles, all lit up. A fire extinguisher was held in readyness by one of the guests but luckily was not needed, but we worried about smoke inhalation for Dick as he drew a deep breath before blowing out all the candles, with a little help from his family. A rumour went around about the neighbors seeing the glow at the back of the house and dialing 911, but it turned out to be false. As was the rumour that fire service helicopters were coming with their Bambi-Buckets. Might have been interesting, as we had one of their pilots on hand, Rob Dyck, who used to fly helicopters with Dick. Their call-sign when they flew together was "Dick Squared". Of course, what else could it be.
The last part of the web site that follows is a somewhat whimsical approach to the story of how Dick and Lise met. I know that they actually met in the cockpit of a CP Air DC-8, or perhaps at the Taku Hotel where the aircrew of the CP Air DC-3 stayed in Whitehorse. But in my mind I prefer the version that follows, a handsome P-51 pilot and a pretty blonde on a motorcycle meeting at some GPS coordinates out on the salt flats in the desert. More romantic if completely unrealistic. Watch the video and you'll see what I mean ... Goosebumps, what a memory.
There is some Jazz piano interpretation of the 'Happy Birthday to you' song in this video, just for Dick and his love of Jazz, so turn up your speakers a bit. The video is large and takes about 30 seconds to load so please be patient and we hope you enjoy the events of the day and a look back in time to how Dick and Lise may have met, in a parallel universe.
