Cannes, France
Yawn, another day in paradise.
Today, after a leisurely wakening and breakfast, we sampled the Cannes promenade heading east this time, away from the Film Festival Center. The beach was a lovely golden swath of sand, narrow (maybe 30 yards wide) and a sharp drop-off at the water's edge. Beautiful clean sand, well cared for. The promenade was lovely here too, the same old-money hotels and stunning shops, palm trees and flowers on the median that separates the traffic flow.
In the harbour, to the left behind the arc of the cape, lies an island where 'The Man in the Iron Mask' was incarcerated in Chateau St. Marguerite. We were told that only three people other than himself knew his identity, his jailer and the King of France (Louis XIV, I think), and one D'Artagnan. Yes, the same one as The Three Musketeers fame. True? Not true? Who knows or cares. But it adds a bit of spice to the view out across the bay from the graceful promenade of Cannes.
This walk ended in another marina, but not quite so grand as the one in Cannes' inner harbour. Still, the most minor yacht in the main line here would be bigger and better than any in the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club in Stanley Park. Did I mention that there was some serious money in this town?
Long walks today in the lovely sunshine. A spectacular place. Some high winds today out in the Med, blowing north into shore. On our walks we weren't blown around at all, but the waves were very nice with whitecaps out in the bay. On shore, the waves broke and crashed on the sand and along the jetties as the white clouds moved along quickly above us. A nice day.
Out this evening for a walk, took some pictures of the promenade with its night lights on. We could see the waves breaking in the light, but it was too dim for the camera to pick up much of that.
Nice. OOoopps, that's tomorrow.
