Still in Faro, still in The Algarve. This region is legendary, and the home-away-from-home for many Canadians in the winter. They all rave about it, so we'll find out why.
Today we just walked about the city, had lunch, and enjoyed ourselves in the warmth and the sunshine. But, I was bad and I broke the law, I think. In 'the old town', near the inevitable cathedral dating from the 1200's or so, there are many orange trees loaded with fruit. Maybe they bloom all year round, I don't know. Anyway, I can resist temptation only so long and I was tempted to extreme by some of the low hanging fruit. And I picked one. Carefully, looking both ways and being sure that I wasn't being watched, I reached up and it virtually fell into my hand. Honest, officer, look it is so ripe I just picked it up off the sidewalk. Anyway, it didn't come to that, nobody noticed. So I peeled it, very much like a Mandarin orange in texture, it peeled very easily. Hmmmm, the fruit inside looked very yellow, like a lemon. What is this thing, a Mandarin Lemon? So I pulled out a section and licked it, not even risking a bite. Whooooo! SOUR!!!! No wonder the trees were full of low hanging fruit, nobody wants the things. They probably make movies (Portugal's Funniest Videos) of tourist's faces who bite down thinking that they have gotten away with something. Mine wound up in the trash barrel a few feet away. The old saying is a fact, if something looks too good to be true, it probably is. Or was, in this case. Jan just laughed at me and she was right.
Both Jan and I had marvelous omlettes for lunch at a cafe right by the marina, then strolled back to the car for the 10 minute ride home. We could have walked downtown from the hotel, but there were no sidewalks and some very busy streets near the hotel, and we didn't want to risk it so we drove.
Home to dinner in the hotel and a happy evening.
