Day 34:

Sort of a quiet day today, setting up a bit of the Thanksgiving Day celebrations set for this weekend.

Wandered a bit around the girl's neighborhood of Acton Town, shopping and taking pictures. The thing that struck me most was, apart from the extraordinary multicultural aspect of London and its suburbs, is that there isn't a single street that goes straight for even the equivalent of a city block. No complaints here, the neighborhood is lovely, looking very much like our old area in Dunbar except that the properties, streets, and sidewalks are narrower. But the same tree-lined streets and well kept homes. But the streets are all curved, sometimes a compound curve in the same block. I think that way back in the middle ages (I wouldn't be surprised) some of the local goats or cows carved out these paths in their daily journeys. Then people built dwellings along the goat tracks, and from there a city happened. It must have been that way, nobody would deliberately lay out a city like this. It isn't just Acton Town, London is the same way, and Hammersmith. Probably all of England, who knows. Anyway, the thought struck me so I thought I would pass it on, not that it detracts in any way from the charm and beauty of the place. Just makes it better. Other observations, doctor's offices are on residential streets here in Acton Town, and are called 'Surgeries'. The notion of multi-doctor clinics hasn't caught on here as far as I can see. Also, a lot of homes have closelines where washing is hung to dry just like when I was a kid. Power is so expensive.

A couple of shots of the local streets, subway station, shopping center, etc. Homey stuff.
